Here are some tips for making your home look great on short notice.
PICK IT UP Even a house that hasn’t been cleaned in weeks will appear clean at first glance if you get rid of the clutter. Stack the magazines neatly on the coffee table, get rid of the pile of mail on the kitchen counter, straighten the lampshades, fluff the pillows, and put away the pile of laundry. Not only will your guests be impressed, you’ll see an instant improvement in your stress level.
MAKE IT SHINE If you don’t have time to scrub the bathrooms properly, a bottle of glass cleaner can be your best friend. Shining the faucet on the sink will remove water spots and make a sparkling impression. While you’re at it, clean the toothpaste off the mirror and take a few quick swipes around the sink and toilet. Put out fresh towels and a new roll of toilet paper. The glass cleaner, which will leave the surface smooth and shiny, is also an excellent quick fix for your kitchen sink and appliances.
TURN IT DOWN If your guests are coming in the evening, candles and soft lighting will work wonders to hide the imperfections of your housekeeping. Make use of any dimmer switches in the house and consider replacing high-wattage light bulbs with something a little less glaring. Choosing candles with a light, citrus scent will give your home an instant aura of cleanliness.
MAKE IT SPECIAL If your guests will be staying overnight, be sure you change the sheets in the guest room, dust the tables next to the bed, and if you have time, buy some fresh flowers for the room. In addition to making your guests feel welcome, a bouquet of flowers will encourage them to overlook the cobwebs lurking in the corner.
MAKE IT STRESS FREE If guests drop in without much notice, try to relax. Hopefully they are coming to see you and not your home. This is probably not the time to dust under the bed, clean the ceiling fan and try to remove a year’s worth of dust from your mini-blinds. If you go overboard, you’ll stress yourself out and your guests will pick up on it. Concentrate on general cleaning of high traffic areas and the area where you’re most likely to entertain. For example, if your coffee table is the focal point of your seating arrangement, make sure it’s dusted. The kid’s rooms, on the other hand, probably should be the last thing on your list.
